Community in Action: Building Momentum — and a Future — at Scully Learning Center
April 20, 2026
At Scully Learning Center Foundation, we often talk about community. But what we witnessed over the past month was more than just support — it was a powerful reminder of what happens when people come together with purpose.
At the recent Cave Creek parade, we had the opportunity to stand alongside our community, share our mission, and celebrate the spirit that makes this area so special. For many, it was a fun local event. For us, it was something deeper — a moment to connect, to be seen, and to be supported by the very community we serve.
That same spirit carried into our recent penny drive. Over the course of the month, we raised more than $1,000 in pennies and small donations. On the surface, it may seem like a simple effort. But behind every handful of coins was a choice — someone deciding they wanted to be part of something meaningful. It was participation from all levels, and a reminder that impact is not defined by the size of a gift, but by the willingness to give.
Behind all of this momentum, however, is a story that continues to shape our mission.
Many of the developmentally disabled adults we serve have been part of Scully Learning Center for nearly 15 years. Over that time, they have built friendships, routines, and a sense of belonging that is incredibly meaningful. But just as their lives have evolved, so have the realities facing their families.
Most of our participants are cared for by parents or family members who have devoted their lives to supporting them. These caregivers have provided love, stability, and daily care for decades. Yet as they grow older, there is a question that becomes impossible to ignore:
What happens next?
What happens when a parent can no longer provide care?
What happens when there is no clear place for their child to go?
These are not distant concerns — they are real, immediate, and deeply emotional realities for the families we serve.
This is why Scully Learning Center Foundation is working toward building a long-term group home for many of our participants. Our vision is simple, but powerful: to create a safe, stable home where our friends can continue living with dignity, surrounded by a familiar community that knows and cares for them.
A place where routines continue.
Where friendships remain intact.
Where families can have peace of mind knowing their loved one is safe, supported, and not alone.
As we look ahead, we are also preparing for one of our most exciting community-driven initiatives — “Dancing with the Desert Stars,” taking place this September in Carefree. In partnership with other local charities, the event will bring together community leaders and local personalities, paired with professional dancers, for an evening of competition, entertainment, and purpose. Participants will compete for prize money that will be donated to the charities they represent, creating both awareness and meaningful impact.
Events like this are critical — not just for fundraising, but for building the kind of community support that makes long-term goals like our future group home possible.
The momentum we are seeing — from a parade, to a penny drive, to upcoming events — is encouraging. But the need remains, and the mission continues.
If this resonates with you, we invite you to be part of what we are building. Whether through a one-time donation, monthly support, or simply sharing our story, your involvement helps create a future where the individuals we serve are cared for, supported, and never left without a place to call home.
With gratitude,
Scully Learning Center Foundation
